Truck Accidents Involving Hazardous Materials

Not all truck accidents involve just crashes. Sometimes hazardous materials (“hazmat”) that spill on a highway or explode are the source of injuries — with or without crashes. A truck that tips over for any reason may introduce hazardous materials such as the following onto a roadway or nearby:

  • Dangerous chemicals
  • Agricultural cargo
  • Logs on logging trucks

REGULATIONS PLACED ON TRUCKS CARRYING HAZARDOUS CARGO

There are several rules which trucks carrying hazardous cargo are required to obey according to federal regulations.

Some of these rules include:

  • Clearly displaying the appropriate signage identifying the cargo as being hazardous
  • Properly handling, loading, and securing the cargo
  • Never traveling on certain roads where a particular material is considered a hazard to public safety
  • Never parking within five feet of a public road
  • For some types of materials, the cargo must be under constant monitoring
  • Truck drivers responsible for hauling the cargo must be fully educated on its transport

HAZMAT TRUCK ACCIDENT LAWYERS

In some cases, noxious fumes released in a spill caused by a crash or rollover accident lead to evacuation orders in nearby inhabited areas. Whatever the circumstances and whatever the injuries, it is especially important — as in the case of any serious accident — to contact a personal injury attorney promptly.

Waiting to get a lawyer on your side after a truck accident involving hazardous materials will inevitably result in missed opportunities to document the accident in detail. Photographs, hazardous material samples, eyewitnesses, weather reports, police reports and doctors’ reports are all examples of evidence that should be gathered sooner rather than later after a chemical spill or similar type of truck accident.

Perhaps lumber from a truck in front of your car fell off, crashing through your windshield and causing an accident. Perhaps oil or some other slippery substance leaked onto a roadway, causing your car to skid and crash. No matter what the details of the truck accident involving some type of hazardous material, Frantz Law Group, welcomes the opportunity to evaluate your case and make recommendations as to how you can recover compensation.
