Any crash that takes a life is a tragedy. When an accident takes the life of a child, though, the heart breaks just a little more. An innocent life that was full of such promise is needlessly cut short and a family is forced to struggle with the loss of their most precious gift.

Unfortunately, the news seems to be full of such stories and this week was no exception. One child is dead and two other children are in critical condition following a horrific crash near Santa Monica in early June. The 2-year-old child was in a Honda van traveling west on the the freeway near McLure Tunnel when an 18-wheeler slammed into the side of the vehicle. Investigators are now saying that the semi was speeding when the driver approached a curve in the tunnel. Unable to slow down in time, the tractor-trailer veered into the other lane and struck the minivan and subsequently plowed into the back of a dump truck that was one vehicle ahead.

The toddler was rushed to an area hospital but later died from his injuries. The six other passengers, including four other children, ranging in age from four to 17, were taken to the hospital to receive treatment.

No word was given on whether the truck driver was distracted or intoxicated. An investigation into the crash is ongoing.

There’s some comfort knowing that a family like this may be able to get a measure of justice. Those injured or killed because of someone else’s negligence should never have to pay for medical bills, funeral costs or loss of wages. A California attorney may be able to help procure much needed compensation to take care of these costs and the pain and suffering of losing a loved one.
